Octavo; in full tan calf; with a red morocco label on the spine with titling in gilt; vii, [17], 396 [1] 160 pages; some wear and a few light stains to the boards; a previous owner’s signature on the front end paper; foxing throughout. ~~Jehudi Ashmun led efforts by the American Colonization Society to repatriate African Americans to West Africa. This movement was controversial as many abolitionist saw free African-Americans no more African than White Americans as European. ~~He served two terms as the defacto Governor of the American colony in Liberia. Under his leadership he created a constitution for Liberia which enabled African-Americans in the colony to positions of power in the colony. Very Good binding.
