Bethesda, MD: Writer's Center, 1983. First, Limited Edition. No. 54 of 200 signed and numbered copies. Oblong format (13cm x 25cm); pictorial, comb-bound wrappers with unprinted acetate cover sheets; unpaginated [22 leaves]. Very mild toning to covers, else fine.
The first published book by well-known book artist Carol Barton, proprietor of the Popular Kinetics Press and author of a number of sculptural pop-up and mechanical books, including the popular "Pocket Paper Engineer" books. This, her first work, is a lovely little artist's book in the form of a wordless novel, utilizing original illustration, photomontage, and die-cuts. The production of the book was (according to Barton's Wikipedia page) so challenging that she nearly gave up book arts, until discovering an interest in mechanicals. An important debut by a major American book artist, quite uncommon.
