By Evans, Ivor H. N.
Philadelphia: J.B.Lippincott Company, 1922. Hardcover. Near Fine. Hardcover. Ivor Hugh Norman Evans (1886–1957) was a British anthropologist, ethnographer and archaeologist who spent most of his working life in peninsular British Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia) and in North Borneo (now Sabah, Malaysia). Evans spent much of his career on peninsular Malaya from 1912 until 1932 at the Perak State Museum in Taiping, the first museum in Malaysia. He was appointed Curator there in 1917 and also worked as an ethnographer and archaeologist. Evans took early retirement in 1932 and returned to England, settling at Oulton Broad in Suffolk. He remained there until 1938. However, he missed the East and decided to return to Borneo, where he was to spend the rest of his life. He carried out ethnographic research on the religious beliefs, practices and folklore of the Dusuns of the Kota Belud District area. This is a fascinating look at the natives of Borneo, written by a deeply knowledgeable anthropologist who spent much of his life in that island country. In addition to the text, the book includes 21 unpaginated full-page black and white photographs and a foldout map in the rear of the volume. Bound in bright orange cloth with black titling to the spine and a circular black ornament on the front cover. Slightest bumping to corners but otherwise fine covers. In a torn dust jacket with brown staining to rear panel. Light offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. Text pages are clean and bright. A very nice copy in almost fine condition. Measures 8.75 x 5.5. inches. 318 pages including index. TRAV/092225.
