"The unexpected favor with which the appearance of the 'Manual of the Chapter' was greeted has induced the author to comply with the frequently expressed desire for the publication of that little work in a larger form, better suited to the use of the older members of the Fraternity. The original work was presented to the Royal Craft, in the hope that it might call attention to the ancient ritual of the Chapter Degrees, in what may be properly called the American Rite. The text of the work has been carefully preserved, and such explanatory notes have been added as seemed to be necessary to render the present volume not only a complete Text Book of the several degrees according to the ancient ritual, but also a Guide for every Companion to a proper understanding of the ceremonies and symbolism of the Capitular degrees.
