First editions of Irving's first four books, all inscribed to his best friend. Association copies of the highest order, John Irving’s first four novels, all inscribed to his best friend and fellow writer, Donald Hendrie, Jr., Born in the same year, Irving and Hendrie attended Philips Exeter Academy, where their friendship began and where their precocity as writers was first recognized by their English instructor Richard Niebling, whose daughter Susan Hendrie would marry. After graduating from Exeter, Irving attended the University of New Hampshire and Hendrie attended Stanford. Later both Irving and Hendrie earned their MFA degrees from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where they both would also teach. They would also teach at Mt Holyoke College. The author of six books, Hendrie later became the director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. The singular importance of this friendship is indisputable: the voluminous Irving-Hendrie correspondence, including over 400 letters from Irving to Hendrie dating from 1965 to 1994, is now at the Beinecke Library at Yale University.
