Diane Wakoski earned her BA from University of California, Berkeley. After finishing her BA, Wakoski moved to New York City, where she published her first poetry collection, Coins and Coffins (Hawk's Well Press, 1962).
"In Contemporary Literature, Marjorie Perloff spoke of Wakoski's purpose in writing non-traditionally structured poems, saying that Wakoski 'strives for a voice that is wholly natural, spontaneous, and direct. Accordingly, she avoids all fixed forms, definite rhythms, or organized image patterns in the drive to tell us the Whole Truth about herself, to be sincere.'" - Poetry Foundation
Wakoski's awards include a Fulbright fellowship, a Michigan Arts Foundation award, and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Michigan Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Her work has appeared in such periodicals as The New Yorker, The Nation, and Poetry.
