The book has been re-backed with a black cloth spine with white library lettering. The covers show scuffing, edge-wear, and rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. The binding is solid, but with tape at the hinges and at the center margin of the first few pages for crude repair/strengthening. The contents are bright and generally clean with light toning and foxing. There is a real photo frontispiece, a portrait of Clement L. Vallandigham. .
