[England?], 19th Century. Very good. Some light dust soiling, fraying, fading to some parts.. A set of seven (7) ceremonial masks handcrafted for the Odd Fellows (also "Oddfellows"), a secret British fraternal organization that originated in the 18th century. Though official records date the organization to the 1740s, rumors and legend persist that the fellowship dates back to Rome, adding to the group's mystique. These masks were handmade in the 19th century for their membership initiation, a ceremony shrouded in shadow but known to embrace ritual and a taste of the macabre. Odd Fellows masks will pop up from time to time, and have been tied to their initiation ceremony for centuries. Usually made from molded mesh or linen, they sometimes also incorporate other materials, such as real human hair. These examples are rather interesting and unique in that they seem to vaguely gesture towards East Asian theatrical masks. Each mask measures approx. 6.5" by 6.5" by 2", and is handmade from linen hand-molded into form with light paste or paper mache, and cut into form. Red, green, black, and yellow paints have been used for the features. The Odd Fellows still exist today, and promote a mission of philanthropy, fellowship, and good will on their website. The organization spread to America in the 19th century, and soon after began including African Americans and women's auxiliary groups. It is now a fully inclusive society.
