Liverpool: Published for Orson Pratt by S.W. Richards, 15, Wilton Street & Printed by R. James, 39, South Castle Street, 1854. Tenth European edition. Leather bound. Very Good. 379 pp. 11.5 cm. Full leather with lovely decorative patterns embossed on both boards and backstrip. Title in gilt on the backstrip ("L.D.S. HYMNS"). Red speckled edges, now faded. Yellow coated endsheets. Previous owner's name neatly written in lightly faded ink on the front pastedown: "Sarah Baxter | Salt Lake City Utah | June 6 1879."

Corners of the boards have been professionally repaired and toned. Sewing is a bit loose in a few places throughout the text. The foot of the spine is bumped with a small chip and loss from the bottom of the backstrip (measuring 1/3"). The front free endpaper is missing with bits of its remnants near the hinge, otherwise this volume is complete. Spine very slightly cocked, leaning forward, and front board slightly bowed. Rear free endpaper is marked with some notes in neat black ink. Internally nice, unmarked, and with only sporadic light toning, staining. A few small sections of pages are slightly loose. Occasional light bumps to page corners and a handful of random dog-eared pages. A nice, sound copy. "Preface to the tenth edition. – The ninth European edition of this valuable collection of Sacred Hymns and Spiritual Songs having run out, another edition of ten thousand copies is now presented to the Saints, without any essential alteration from the last edition."

"The 1854 hymnal is essentially a line-for-line reprint of the 1851 edition, but without the asterisks of that edition, and with many changes in punctuation and the elimination of many contractions." –Peter Crawley

"As late as March 19, 1873, copies of the '10th edition, suitable for Sunday Schools, roan' were being advertised for sale in the Deseret News at 25 cents a copy." –Shane Chism
