1894. CHICAGO. Buildings and Art at the World's Fair. Illustrated throughout with photographs. Oblong folio, bound in publisher's brown crushed morocco. Chicago: Rand McNally & Company, 1894. A splendid record of this important exhibition, which had an innovative effect on Chicago's architecture, the arts and American industry. The exhibition was largely designed by the architect and construction manager, Daniel Burnham, and the landscape artist Frederick Law Olmsted. It was designed to follow the design principles of the fine arts, namely the principles of European classical architecture based on symmetry and balance. The exhibition covered an area of 2.4 km, including nearly 200 new buildings in the classical style, as well as parks, canals and lagoons. One of the interesting aspects of the exhibition was the "Woman's Building", managed by an all-women committee, all its architecture was designed and decorative elements (sculptures, paintings, etc.) were made by women. The painter, Mary Cassatt created a fresco for the hall in honour of the pavilion entitled "The Modern Woman." A world congress of women was held during the exhibition. Some restoration to the binding, but a sound copy.
