Paris, 1709. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Nostradamus by J. Sauvé. Contemporary mottled calf, spine and label gilt, board edges gilt. Obscured inscription on the title. A very good copy. First edition thus, second overall, of this critical examination of Nostradamus’ prophecies regarding the monarchy of France. The text opens with a biography of the seer before transcribing and explaining his predictions about the time between the reigns of Henry II (1547-1559) and Louis XIV (1643-time of publication). Guynaud explicates 180 of the 1000 individual quatrains from Nostradamus’ Centuries. He vehemently supports the seer, attacks his opponents, and attempts to prove the veracity of his prophecies. First published in 1693, this edition was revised and expanded from the original text.
