Bishop began his entertainment career in high school as part of a comedy trio, later going on to perform standup comedy in New York City. He began headlining nightclubs in the 1950s, and gained some early fame for his work as an opening act for Frank Sinatra. He starred in the 1961-1964 comedy television series "The Joey Bishop Show," and also appeared in several comedy, action, and Western films throughout the 1960s, most notably "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) and "Texas Across the River" (1966).
