Leather and boards rubbed and worn with extensive exposure at corners, Vol. I with coin-sized loss of paper to upper cover and rear board paper entirely lacking, foxing to preliminaries. Overall a Good to Very Good, sound set with the attractive contemporary armorial ex libris of Susan Mary Anne Wharton to each front pastedown.

A late historical novel by the popular French author Marie Cottin (1770-1807), "Mathilde" is described in the Encyclopedia Britannica as an "extravagant crusading story.
