New York: McLoughlin Bros, 1875. [JUVENILE] [ABECEDARIAN] [RHYMING VERSE] [ILLUSTRATED].
Small 4to; [12]pp; stiff yellow pictorial wrapper with the title printed in red on the front and a color vignette of a woman sewing while a young child looks on with an open ABC book; ownership in pencil on front above the border; rear wrapper features publisher’s ad for “New Picture Books for Little Children,” including “Big Picture Series—31 Kinds.,” “Uncle Ned’s Picture Books.,” “Gilt Cover Picture Books.,” “Golden Light Series.,” and “Half-Hours with the Bible.”; publisher’s string binding; alphabet letters printed in red and accompanied by color pictorials; numbered lessons with one-syllable words are found on alternate pages; 3” split from bottom at spine fold; very good plus. OCLC locates only 6 copies. A wonderful child’s ABC book with a colorful pictorial front cover. Lively color illustrations accompany each boldly printed letter, and many are accompanied by rhymes. In typical Victorian fashion, many of the rhymes are quirky and would raise eyebrows in a children’s book today.
“C. Curious, croaking, carrion Crow, / The tailor shot at with his cross-bow.”
“T. This, a trim and turban’d TURK, / More fond of smoking than of work.”
The moral lessons so frequently found in Victorian children’s books are also represented.
“E. Earnest ELLEN will excel, / For she learns her lessons well.”
“I. IGNORANCE and IDLENESS, / Bring poor Isaac to distress.”
The lessons included in this book are numbered II through XI, skipping the number I. Preceding the lessons, the alphabet is pictured in capital letters and in lowercase letters or minuscules. The lessons feature two, three- and four-letter words to teach both spelling and pronunciation.
