Liverpool & London: George Q. Cannon, 42, Islington & L. D. Saints' Book Depot, 30, Florence Street, 1863. Twelfth edition, revised and corrected. Leather Bound. Good. [1-5], 6-415, [416] pp. 12 cm. Full brown leather with decorative blind ruling, patterns, and designs to the boards and spine. Spine label with "L.D.S. HYMNS" stamped in gilt (which is now faded but still visible).
Professional repair work to the binding and boards, especially around the hinges and joints. Corners of the boards have been professionally toned and repaired, and textblock edges lightly sanded. New endsheets. The following pages are supplied printed facsimiles: [1]-6 (i.e. the first 3 printed leaves), and 415-[416] (i.e. the final printed leaf). The following pages are missing: 2 p.l. [the preliminary blanks/leaves called for in both Flake and Chism], 19-20, 179-182, 195-198, 211-214, 227-228, and 405-406. Page 229 is misprinted as"922". The boards are bumped at the corners. A few sporadic tiny closed tears at edges and margins, a few dog-eared pages. Some minor and sporadic age-toning, soiling, wear, and staining to various of the pages throughout, especially around the edges, as typically seen in hymnals. Page 11/12 has a one-inch closed tear (with no loss) and a separate tiny chip to its fore-edge. Pages 137-142 each have a small, consistent pinhole in the margin near the fore-edge. Still an attractive copy, even with its repairs and flaws. Rare. LDS hymnals and scriptures published in Liverpool during the years of the American Civil War, and throughout the 1860s, are quite scarce.
"PREFACE to the Twelfth Edition. — The twelfth edition of the Hymn Book is now published, and if it should meet with as cordial a reception at the hands of the Saints as the preceding editions have done, the most sanguine desire of the Editor will be gratified. The present edition differs from those which have preceded it in the size of the paper on which it is printed, and in the substitution of forty-four hymns, mostly by our own authors, in the stead of a number selected from other collections which were scarcely so well adapted for the worship of the Saints. Though it has been found impracticable to keep the numbers of the hymns as in the last edition, great care has been taken to preserve the same paging, that as little confusion as possible may ensue through the use of this and previous editions in common. That this little Book may go forth and accomplish a glorious mission in proving a source of consolation and joy to the Saints, is the prayer of your servant in Christ, George Q. Cannon. 42, Islington, Liverpool, May 16th, 1863."
Of this 1863 twelfth edition, Chism states: "Twenty-nine of the forty-four new hymns are of Mormon authorship, four by William Clegg, three by Eliza R. Snow, two each by Charles W. Penrose, Parley P. Pratt, and William Willes, and one each by William Fowler, Joel H. Johnson, W. W. Phelps, and Emily Hill Woodmansee. Two of the added hymns are by Isaac Watts. Fourteen hymns remain in today's official LDS hymnbook, including William Fowler's "We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet," Joel H. Johnson's "High on a Mountain Top," and W. W. Phelps' "If You Could Hie to Kolob." No. 29 appears twice, as "Come We That Love the Lord" and "What Was Witnessed in the Heavens," followed by no. 31 [as no hymn #30 is printed in this work], "Happy the Man Who Finds the Grave."
Flake/Draper 1770. Chism 80.
