A lovely fable inoffensively illustrated and published in the wake of Lawrence's run-in with the censors. "Lady Chatterly's Lover" had just appeared in Italy the previous year, on top of which Lawrence had just put on his first solo exhibition of paintings at the Dorothy Warren Gallery in London--all the paintings showed nude men and women generally reprising themes from the earlier novel. Scotland Yard was called in and the paintings confiscated.
"Lawrence feared that the uproar about his paintings in London might have made the Crosbys dubious about printing 'The Escaped Cock' and wrote them from Baden-Baden not to bother about the thing for a minute if they didn't want to. Of course the Crosbys did not consider for a moment the possibility of abandoning their plans" (Roberts).
