Though these stories were first published here shortly after Lawrence's death, most of them were written very early in his career, in 1912. He had sent them to David Garnett's father the editor Edward Garnett, who failed to get them published at the time. "After Lawrence's death they were brought to me to publish: and they aroused in me vivid memories of my twentieth year" (from David Garnett's reminiscence, p. [v]).
