1852. GRANDVILLE, J.J. Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux. [4], 220 pp. With engraved title-page and 22 plates. 4to., 295 x 208 mm. Bound in contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Paris: M.M. Maresq and Gustave Havard, 1852. The illustrations contained in this work are some of the most memorable creations of Grandville. Most of Grandville's plates are of single figures, but there are also satirical scenes of everyday life, monsters, animals looking at politicians caged at the zoo, etc. Originally published in 1842 in two volumes, this edition was reset with the text in two columns in order to be able to issue it in one volume. Apart from the occasional spot, this is an almost pristine copy. One of the most charming examples of zoomorphic illustration and an important precursor of surrealism. Ray 194. Carteret III, 552.
