"The greatest as well as the most fascinating of the French [composers of violin music in the early 18th century] was Leclair, a pupil of Somis, himself the pupil of Corelli. Leclair brought a new virtuosity, including multiple stops, to France in his numerous works for violin -- among them solo sonatas, trio sonatas, violin duets, and concertos. ... In Leclair and his followers an unmistakable French flavour persisted although the model [for their sonatas] was Italian." Boyden: The History of Violin Playing, p. 345.
