[Album of Hand-colored Photos Depicting the Philippines]
- SIGNED
- Philippines , 1910
Philippines, 1910. Very good +. 5¾” x 10¾”. String-tied, thick limp leather. 20 leaves, interleaved with tissue which contain narrative typescript captions. One hand-colored photo per leaf measuring 3” x 5”. Album very good plus with light wear; photos near fine or better.
This is a lovely album with gorgeous hand-colored and well-captioned photographs of the Philippines.
Most of the captions are long and fantastic such this one preceding a shot on Malecon Drive in Manila, “this drive skirts the western wall of 'intramuras' (within the wall) and extends from the Pasig River to the Luneta. At the time of the American occupation this drive directly faced Manila Bay but since then a large section of land to the left of the view has been reclaimed and the drive has lost a great deal of its picturesqueness.”
There's a photo of the Manila Hotel, a stunning shot of The Santa Cruz Church and a couple of the botanical gardens. Several show native peoples by their homes, one shows a local man plowing rice fields with a caribou and another shows the Mayon Volcano. Several show the Benguet Road and several were taken in Pagsanjan.
