Nueva York: Juan de la Granja, 1834. Good plus.. vi,100,[4]pp. Small octavo. Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt. Corners bumped, leather scuffed, light wear to edges. Light, even toning; a few scattered fox marks. A scarce Spanish-language imprint of New York, which discusses the diocesan authority of the Pope and papal supremacy in relation to conflicts, what the title calls "schisms," between the archbishopric of Guatemala and the Catholic Church in Honduras. The author, Miguel Muñoz, was a Church official in Nicaragua. Central American and ecclesiastical subject matters are rather unusual for Nueva York imprints of this period.
The publisher, Juan de la Granja (1785-1853), was a Spaniard who emigrated to Mexico in 1814 and then fled to New York in 1827 after Mexico had gained its independence. He founded the first Spanish-language newspaper in the United States, and issued a number of Spanish-language imprints from his press, in an attempt to establish a cultural community in New York for expats. He was eventually made Consul General of Mexico and returned to Mexico at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War.
