First edition of this stunning mid-century modern alphabet book, the first by the African American artist and (later) Caldecott Honor winner. An Army veteran and graduate of Cooper Union, Crews would go on to receive Caldecott Honors for FREIGHT TRAIN (1978) and TRUCK (1980). In 2015, he was selected for the ALA's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, granted for "a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children." 7.75'' x 8''. Original color paper boards. In original unclipped ($3.50) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated by Crews in color throughout. [60 pages. Sunning to jacket spine and a bit to rubbed front panel, a couple tiny closed tears. Interior clean and bright.
