By CASO, ALfonso
Mexico City: Imprenta Aldina, 1956. First Edition. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's original cream card wraps, titled in black to front cover. 62pp. Strong and tight, toning to spine, some light creasing and rubbing to the corners, and some mild uniform toning; internally clean and fresh with four folds charts, plans and tables, including a striking full color map of the ancient city of Tenochitlan. A very good copy.

A Spanish language study, presented originally as part of the lectures of the Mexican Academy of History, of the ancient urban sprawl of Tenchitlan prior to and during the Spanish incursion into Mexico, and how the various barrios informed the architectural and social destiny of the later metropolitan plan. Dr. Caso was one of the most celebrated historians and archeological investigators of Mexican history for the majority of his professional life, beginning in his student days when he was a member of the 'Los Siete Sabios de Mexico' (the seven wise men, or sages), an organisation dedicated to encouraging cultural preservation and respect amongst the student population. He was a significant fgure in the excavations of Monte Alban, Yucuita, and Monte negro, and was one of the earliest adopters of an interdisciplinary approach to mexican archeology, feeling that understanding depended upon a variety of studies encompassing anthropology, folklore, ethnological investigation, and an equally detailed eye upon contemporary cultural demographics and where they overlapped with the ancient. This work, probably partly due to its somewhat esoteric specificity, is one of his less prominent publications.
