The Fire Next Time contains only two essays — "My Dungeon Shook: Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation" and "Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind, " the latter of which comprises the bulk of the book — both of which delve into Baldwin's recurrent topics of race and religion. The two essays were first published separately in 1962, "Down at the Cross" in The New Yorker, and "My Dungeon Shook" in The Progressive.
