Pages toned; offsetting to front endsheets; first free endsheet separated from binding, but otherwise intact. Former owner leather disk bookplates in plastic bag loosely laid in at front. A Very Good or better copy of Lawrence's first short story collection.
Best known for his novels Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley's Lover, Lawrence explored themes of sexuality, romance, and modernity in his works, often becoming the subject of censorship. His short stories are no different. The leather disk bookplates are from the library of John Dozier Gordon, former curator of the Berg Collection of rare American and English materials at the New York Public Library. This copy appears to be variant (1) as described by Roberts with 20 pages of ads and gilt stamping.
