- Allentown, PA: [Ladies Aid Society], 1896
Allentown, PA: [Ladies Aid Society], 1896. Very Good. [Allentown, PA?]: [Ladies Aid Society], 1896. Original printed broadside (22x14.5cm) for a "Poverty Partty" (read Poverty Party) given by the Ladies Aid Society. A few nicks; folds; Very Good.
An artifact of the Gilded Age trend of the Poverty Party in which the rich would dress up and try to raise money for the poor, but the condescending insensitivity of the time and the trend is on full display here. The invitation outlines the rules of attendance and the dress - women must "leve ther poughdle dorg at hum." Fines are listed for violating the dress code and at the end are "Eckstres," being "Flurtin, 3 sense" and "Spoonin 25 cents." While we have not located the party precisely, we believe it is likely the Grange Park near Allentown, PA. We locate no records in OCLC.
