New York: Galahad Books. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1973). 1st hardcover edition. Hardcover. [spine slightly turned, no significant wear, some ink check-marks in the text (see Notes); the jacket shows a bit of wear at edges and corners, with a handful of tiny nicks along the top and bottom edges]. (The Pictorial Treasury of Film Stars) Series (B&W photographs) A very basic biography of Bogart, heavily photo-illustrated; mostly it's a survey of his films (with a filmography at the end). Published more or less simultaneously with the softcover edition, which was an entry in the "Pyramid Illustrated History of the Movies" series. As a book about Bogart, it's of no great distinction, but this copy has a notable provenance: it comes from the library of director Vincent Sherman (and bears his ownership signature on the front endpaper). Sherman, probably best-known for his Warner Bros. films of the 1940s and 1950s starring several high-powered movie divas (Bette Davis, Ida Lupino, Joan Crawford, Ann Sheridan), actually began his directorial career by directing Bogart in one of the actor's least notable movies, 1939's THE RETURN OF DOCTOR X. Fortunately, they worked together again, with Sherman directing two of Bogart's 1942 releases, ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT and ACROSS THE PACIFIC (sharing credit with John Huston for the latter). Note that there are small ink check-marks next to a number of titles in the filmography, and next to the discussion of ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT in the text -- but NOT next to the few words expended on THE RETURN OF DOCTOR X, which the author dismisses as a "ghastly two-bit film" and a "journey into complete tastelessness."
