Malraux was in a distinct position to write such an intimate work, having served as the first minister of cultural affairs during de Gaulle's presidency from 1959 to 1969. Before that Malraux had also served as de Gaulle's information minister from 1945 to 1946. This copy inscribed and signed to the former U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Bohlen (1962-1968). Bohlen also served as Ambassador to the Soviet Union and the Philippines.
