Arthur Penn's absurdist revisionist Western, wherein Marlon Brando, in a largely improvised performance, portrays an eccentric Irish-American "regulator" who is hired to hunt down a gang of horse thieves led by Jack Nicholson. Largely derided at the time of its release, the film has since been re-evaluated as one of the more fascinating genre films of the 1970s.
