By Burnett, W.R.
New York: Harper & Brothers. Very Good+. 1933. Later Printing (H-H). Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [solid copy, moderate shelfwear, light bumping to top corners, one-time owner's florid signature on half-title page]. Tale of a gambler who gets married and tries to reform, but it doesn't take. At the dog-track, he develops an affection for a particular greyhound (the book's title is the dog's name), eventually deciding that he wants to own the dog himself. Filmed twice, under its original title in 1934 (starring Edward G. Robinson, and generally following the plot of the book) and again as WINE, WOMEN AND HORSES in 1937 (with Barton MacLane, and no dog at all!). The middle section of the book is set in "Crescent City," which seems to be Los Angeles, thinly-disguised; I guess that accounts for its inclusion in Baird & Greenwood (no. 359), although they don't bother to actually say so. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .
