Comic western novel about a U.S. Army Colonel, a distinguished veteran of the Civil War, who is assigned to escort a wagon train of 2700 cases of French champagne and 1600 barrels of whiskey to the mining camp of Denver in the Colorado Territory. Source for the 1965 Burt Lancaster film THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL, which aspires to be rollicking, but at 165 minutes runs out of rollick long before the final credits roll. .
