A Fable

  • New York: Random House, 1954
By Faulkner, William
New York: Random House, 1954. First trade edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy in like dust jacket. First printing, in the first issue dust jacket with "8/54" at the bottom of the front panel. Publisher's red cloth boards. Jacket with a bit of abrasion to edges, but still an excellent example, retaining its bright blues.

A Fable, which won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, took Faulkner over ten years to write. Set in World War I – and inspired closely by the life of Jesus – the novel follows Corporal Stephan, whose actions eventually bring a halt to the war. “Whatever its 'sources,' if such these be, Faulkner has stamped A Fable as his own. His method of delayed revelation is present in extreme form and will make difficult reading for some and exciting reading for others. His style, at times very demanding of the reader, rises often to magnificence” (contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine dust jacket.
