With gilt-bordering along the panels, finely gilt-tooled compartments and bright gilt-titling along the spines. Very minor wear to several of the outer hinges and spine ends, light scuffing to a number of the panels. Armorial, contemorary-to-the-period bookplate ("Frederick John Walker") at each front pastedown. Lovely marbled edges and endsheets, large fold-out map as well ("A Map of the Eastern Part of the Roman Empire") at the rear of Vol. I. From the "Preface by the Editor" (William Smith, L.L.D.): "This edition of the 'History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' is distinguished by a correct text, the verification of the references to ancient writers, and corrective and supplementary notes.
