Hell's Angels
- New York: Random House, 1967
New York: Random House, 1967. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Publisher's black cloth boards with silver biker stamp. Upper board a bit dusty at bottom edge and some rubbing to lower free endpaper. Dust jacket with two small closed tears at top edge (unrestored) and a bit of toning to front flap. Overall a very attractive example.
A contemporary New York Times review called Hunter S. Thompson's first foray into gonzo journalism "a portrayal of a world most of us would never dare encounter." Still considered one of the finest examples of immersion journalism, Hell's Angels takes readers deep into the much-feared motorcycle gang; this was a move made possible when Thompson was introduced into the gang by Birney Jarvis, a former club member turned police-beat reporter in San Francisco. With entre to the club, Thompson was able to get close to members in a way no outsider had before, and members became increasingly open to having the author record their experiences across the year he spent with them. Ultimately, Thompson himself commented that he "was no longer sure whether I was doing research on the Hell's Angels or being slowly absorbed by them." Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
