Los Angeles, CA: Carque Pure Food Co, 1890. [First Edition]. Very Good+. [First Edition]. [Dr.] Harrry Ellington Brook was a Los Angeles based journalist and naturopathic patent medicine practitioner. Mr. Brook wrote a health column in the LA Times titled "Care of the Body." Brook's endeavors into naturopathic health are illustrated in pamphlet for the medicinal inunction (rubbing) ointment, St. James oil. The late 19th century and early 20th century mail order and advertising medicines flourished particularly in areas of the country with natural living and foods initiatives. A scarce example of undisclosed or unadulterated therapeutic advertising in the late 19th century before the 1906 Pure Food & Drug Act, stimulating the FDA. A reference to spiritual healing oil was also common to entice a holistic healing method. It is likely the compound featured turpentine, alcohol, aconite (pain relief), and capsicum. Also included a mail order advertisement for the publications of the National Surgical Institute. No holdings in OCLC. Light creases and toning, else bright and unmarred. Bifolium printed in blue. 8vo. 4[pp]. Includes laid in advertisement.
