Full Description:
[COOKERY] Manuscript Recipe Book. [England, n.d.c.a. 1825-1877].
Nineteenth-century manuscript cookbook. Small quarto (7 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches; 195 x 160 mm) 64 pp. Most pages filled with neat manuscript recipes in the same hand. A few newspaper clippings tipped in on front pastedown and a manuscript recipe on blue paper laid down on verso of first leaf. Probably British as the tipped in newspaper clippings seem to be British.
Contemporary quarter maroon morocco over marbled boards. Internal hinges are weak. Boards and spine are rubbed. An inch at head of spine is chipped away. First leaf with some wrinkling from glue. One leaf a bit loose but holding. A few light spots, but overall internally very clean, particularly for a cookbook. Overall a very good cookbook.
Comprises numerous recipes including recipes for wines and desserts. Specifically, "To make College Puddings"; "Citron Cheesecakes"; "To make Cyder"; "Lemon Biscuits"; "Orange Jelly"; "Apple Cheesecake"; "Ginger Beer"; "Bridlington Cakes"; "Cowslip Wine" and "Elder Wine" to name a few.
The date estimation comes from the watermark of the paper which reads "1825." Additionally the recipe "To make Cyder" has been dated "Dec 10th, 1833" and the final recipe "Grape Wine" is dates 1877.
