First edition. Small quarto (7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; 190 x 140 mm). [2], 37, [1, blank]; [2], 40; [2], 24; [2], 26; [2], 23, [1, blank]; [2], 16 pp. With general title and separate title-pages for all sermons except the first sermon. Each title-page within a woodcut border. All text leaves within a ruled border. Woodcut head-and-tail pieces, and initials. Bound without initial blank that contains just a woodcut ornament, and without the separate title-page for the first sermon.
Bound to style in fill speckled calf. Boards double-ruled in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Board edges gilt. Front flyleaf with contemporary ink manuscript notes.. Some old ink and pencil marginalia. First two leaves frayed along edges, just touching the engraved borders. Repairs to upper inner corner of four leaves of signature P, not affecting text, just touching border. Leaves V and V2 bound out of order behind leaves V3 and V4. Overall a very good copy.
The title-pages following the general title are as follows: "The second sermon preached before King Charles, upon the xxvi verse of the first chapter of Genesis", "A sermon upon the xix verse of the ii chapter of Hosea", "A sermon upon the xliiii verse of the xxi chapter of Matthew", "A sermon upon the xxii verse of the v chapter of John", and "A sermon upon the xv verse of the viii chapter of John" each has separate dated title page and pagination; register is continuous.
