Ciudad Universitaria, México: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Very Good+. 1992 (c.1985). 2nd printing. Softcover. (oversize softcover) [modest bumping at lower front hinge, some surface rubbing/scuffing to rear cover]. (B&W photographs) An exhaustive chronicle (entirely in Spanish) of American newsreel coverage of the Mexican Revolution, including the exploits of Pancho Villa. Following a couple of introductory essays, the bulk of the book is devoted to "Documentos y fotografias." The documents are primarily translations of English-language press accounts (many from motion picture trade periodicals such as The Moving Picture World) and book excerpts, and are accompanied by many vintage photographs, usually produced full-page-size, on pages facing the text. Following this is a complete rundown of all the different newsreel companies' coverage: the numbers and dates of every issue that included any coverage of the war, along with a brief description. (Covered are: Pathé's Weekly; Gaumont Weekly; Animated Weekly; Mutual Weekly; Hearst-Selig News Pictorial; Hearst-Vitagraph News Pictorial; Selig-Tribune.) There are three appendices: Biofilmographies (short entries on the various cameramen and other film personnel); Filmography (of films, including fictionalized portrayals, about the Revolution); and a section of photographs of the cameramen, either in action or posing with their cameras and/or comrades. Fully indexed by name, title, and subject. On the one hand (for non-Spanish readers) one might wish that this volume was available in English, but on the other hand, most of the material that's printed here WAS in fact originally published in English, so it can still be useful in a bibliographic sense, as a guide to the literature on this subject -- and of course there are also the copious photographs, which in large measure speak for themselves. (One might also want to seek out Kevin Brownlow's excellent book "The War, the West, and the Wilderness," which covers some of the same territory.) ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.
