The Design Committee on Central Area, Municipal Airport at Idlewild, 1946. Pictorial wrappers. Very Good. Hugh Ferriss. Uncommon, important 1946 study of the expansion of New York's Idlewild Airport (of course, eventually to be renamed JFK). Notably, the report is designed by the major architectural delineator Hugh Ferriss (1989-1962), whose first-rate illustrations bring the proposal to life. The proposal essentially pitches a new "design for the Terminal, Utility and Service Buildings and The Central Area at the Municipal Airport at Idlewild". The team of architects (and architectural firms) behind the report include Downer, Green and Cabrillo; Clarke, Rapuano and Holleran; and Harrison and Abramovitz. The report, an oblong folio in its collaged stapled wrappers, has held up nicely. Bright and VG, with light abrading and wear along the tips of a small number of pages. The plates themselves crisp and clean, the color employed in a number of the diagrams vivid and strong. Layout by R. Pontabry, aerial photography by Fairchild Aerial Surveys Inc. Fascinating post-War study in urban planning and design in the New York region.
