Full leather with debossed boards, gilt titles and decorations, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles on turn-ins. A collection of 75 photographs of faculty, staff, students, buildings, and roads associated with Yale University immediately following the American Civil War. Yale pioneered the concept of the modern yearbook, with the first appearance in 1806 (entitled Profiles of Part of the Class Graduated at Yale College and featuring printed silhouettes of students, as photography had not yet been invented). Before this, only scrapbooks existed. Includes two photographs of African American men, captioned 'Candy Sam' and 'Hannibal.' Candy Sam was Theodore Ferris who along with his wife Mary was an independent vendor of confections on the college campus. [George Joseph] Hannibal was also a confectioner. Many African-American 'sweeps' (i.e., custodians) were also employed by the university from 1865-1900. Images included are captioned as follows: Rev. Theodore D. Woolsey, LL.D., President.; Rev. O.E.
