Frente a Frente (1934-1937) was a periodical publication edited by Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (LEAR), a precursor to the Taller de Gráfica Popular. LEAR emerged in 1934 as the strongest of the four artist organizations that included: la Alianza de Trabajadores Misioneros, el Sindicato de Pintores y Escritores and la Federación des Escritores y Artistas Proletarios. The numerous activities of LEAR during it's founding period under Leopoldo Méndez, Luis Arenal include three early posters, graphic work, the first exhibits sponsored by the group; collective murals in the Mercado Albelardo Rodr-quez; participation in the American Writer's Congress (New York, 1935); they worked to resolve the dispute between Siqueiros and Rivera and founded the Taller-Escuela de la LEAR. Issues are noted for strong, artistic illustrations. A portion of the magazine was involved with the Spanish Civil War. They sent a brigade to Spain and the graphics and text included are important historical materials. The issues of July and August of 1937 were almost exclusively devoted to the Spanish Civil War and the Congreso de Valencia. The artists and writers included were of international importance, some included: Waldo Frank, Nicolás Guillén, James Ford, Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, Pablo Neruda, José Chavez Morado, Octavio Paz, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Jorge Juan Crespo de la Serna, Luis Arenal, Francisco Dosamantes, Ignacio Aguirre. Many interesting articles, such as an article by Siqueiros on the work of Diego Rivera. The first number was issued Nov. 1, 1934, the numeration changed in 1935 beginning again with number 1, the last number 13, was issued in agosto 1937. There was one special edition issued in enero of 1937. There were 16 issues in total. Issue 13 has a photomontage by Lola Álvarez Bravo.
