High School" with pencil notation. [Wagner-Camp 148:1, Wheat Trans-Miss 544. William Hemsley Emory (1811-1887) was a surveyor and civil engineer in the U. S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers from 1838 to 1876. In the early years, he was part of the initial explorations and surveys of the American West. He was assigned, after the Mexican-American war, to survey the new border with Mexico. Later, he surveyed the revised border for the Gadsden Purchase which added land to the United States for the southern Transcontinental railroad route.
Many of the illustrations were made by John Mix Stanley (1814-1872) a painter and illustrator of the American West. Stanley participated in many of the early surveys of the west and was part of the railroad surveys in the 1850's. In 1842, he began traveling and painting the Native Americans. In the Mexican -American war he was a draftsman in the U. S. Corps of Topographical Engineers under Colonel Kearny' expedition to California and Oregon. After the war, he was assigned to Emory's survey expedition.
Edward Weber (___ - 1848) was a lithographer from Germany in the mid 1800's and patented a printing process for illustrations, maps, and charts. The company changed the name from Edward Weber and Co. to A. Hoen and Co. and continued to operate until 1981.
