Although it did not pass though subsequent editions, this dictionary has been quite influential. It was one of the sources used by Henry Campbell Black when he compiled his dictionary. An online search shows that it is often cited today. Benjamin Vaughan Abbott [1830-1890] was the secretary of the New York Code Commission and the principal author of the state's penal code, which was completed in 1864. He also served on a commission created to revise the statutes of the United States from 1870 to 1872.
