Catonsville, MD: St. Charles College, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. SCARCE. John Banister Tabb (1845-1909) was an American poet, Roman Catholic priest, and professor of English. He was born in Virginia and was a blockade runner for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, during which he was captured and imprisoned for a period by the Union forces. Tabb converted to Roman Catholicism in 1872 and was ordained a priest in 1884. He taught literature at Saint Charles College in Ellicott City, Maryland beginning in 1878 and died at Saint Charles College in 1909. Father Tabb WAS published in many popular magazines, including Harper's Monthly, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Cosmopolitan. His biographer, Francis A. Litz, produced a volume of previously unpublished poems in Father Tabb: A Study of His Life and Works, in 1923. The collection in this book from 1930 was produced by the Very Reverend Charles B. Schrantz, the President Emeritus of St. Charles College. He acknowledges the previous Litz collection in his introduction. In this collection of 25 poems, Schrantz provides commentary for each. Includes a portrait of Tabb at age 10, with his dog. Very good in patterned green cloth with gilt lettering. Light scuffing along hinges and ends of spine.
