By Lansdell, K.A.
Union of South Africa, Department of Agriculture, The Government Printing and Stationary Office, 1925. Paperback. Very Good. Paperback. Kathleen Annie Lansdell (1888-1967), was a South African botanical and scientific artist who trained at the Government Art School in Durban and at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington. She worked at the Natal Herbarium at the Durban Botanic Gardens, where she prepared illustrations for volume 7 of John Medley Wood's Natal Plants. Some of the plates still hang in the Natal Herbarium. After 1917, she worked at the Division of Botany, Pretoria. This publication is of part of her work at the Division of Botany. On the cover page, she is simply listed as K.A. Lansdell, Botanical Assistant, Division of Botany. This volume is a reprint of several articles previously published in the Journal of the Department of Agriculture, but this reprint includes a full-color illustration of each of the weeks by Lansdell. The weeds included are the Imbricate Cactus, the Cocklebur and Burweed, the Mexican Marigold, the Milk Thistle, and the Water Hyacinth. Some are quite beautiful and might not be considered weeds by many of us. Lovely color illustrations, as well as many black-and-white illustrations and photographs. A very interesting find for the devotee of South Africa flora. Octavo. Tan paper wraps with side stapling and title in black to front wrap. Some handling apparent on wraps, but interior is pristine. Wrinkles on several pages, but not on color illustrations. 34 pages. AFR1/02211.
