He had a long career in both state and federal politics. He had a longstanding involvement with the Olympic movement and represented Australia in hurdling at the 1920 Summer Olympics. During the Second World War, he re-enlisted in the army and took part in the Malayan campaign. He was captured by the Japanese at the Battle of Singapore, and spent the next three years as a prisoner-of-war. This is a limited edition biography by his good friend, Frederick Howard. This is number 400 of 500 copies. Stamped as Surplus Library of Congress Duplicate. Brown/black cloth-covered boards with gilt box and gilt signature replica to front cover. Title in gilt to spine. Brown dust jacket with photo of Hughes to front panel and title in white to front and spine panels. Dust jacket has small open tears and bumping around edges. Library bookplate to front endpaper.
