Henry Reed (1914-1986) was a British poet, writer, and dramatist. He studied at the University of Birmingham and initially worked as a teacher and journalist. He was called up to the Army in 1941, but never left England. Following a serious illness, he was transferred to the Code and Cipher School at Bletchley Park, where he was assigned to breaking Italian codes, and later to translate Japanese. He also contributed poetry, criticism, plays, and adaptations of older works to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) radio from 1944 to 1979. Reed was considered one of the British war poets. He published only one volume of poetry during his lifetime: A Map of Verona (1946), which includes his much-anthologized poem “Naming of Parts", part of the trilogy in Lessons of the War. It juxtaposes the breakdown of a rifle in basic training with the beautiful countryside surrounding it. This is the first American edition. Octavo. Gray cloth boards with very slight soiling to both ends of spine. Brown and yellow jacket with yellow title to front and spine panels. Light rubbing to rear panel and one crease to front flap. 92 pages. POE/052506.
