London: Chatto and Windus, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. SCARCE. Henrietta Stannard (1856-1911), a British novelist, wrote primarily under the pseudonym of John Strange Winter. This was the result of two of her publications, the first in 1881, Cavalry Life, and the second in 1883, Regimental Legends. The publisher refused to bring out these titles under a feminine name or pseudonym, so they were published under the name of John Strange Winter, who was one of her fictional characters. She continued to use the name throughout the rest of her life, and she published many stories of a similar character, with a background of military life, until her death. She was also the founding president of the Writers' Club in 1892, and the president of the Society of Women Journalists in 1901 to 1903. This story is in her tradition of writing about a military background. Octavo. Red cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Charming illustration of children to spine and to front board. Large black marking (marker?) to front board; this does not effect title or illustration. Minor fading to spine and chipping to spine ends. Interior is very clean with many illustrations. Rolled spine. 230 pages plus 32 pages of ads. CHILD/031706.
