He was the father of the famed associate justice of the Supreme Court, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Holmes,Sr. was considered one of the fireside poets, along with Longfellow, Whittier, and others. One of his most famous works, "Old Ironsides", spurred the preservation of the USS Constitution. Although primarily known as a poet, Holmes also wrote medical books, essays, novels, and memoirs. This memoir of John Lothrop Motley was written at the request of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Motley (1814-1877) was himself an American author and a diplomat. He is known for his two works on the Netherlands: The Rise of the Dutch Republic and the History of the United Netherlands. He served as US Minister to Austria during the Lincoln administration and is credited with helping to prevent European intervention to support the Confederacy. In his introductory note, Holmes alludes to this memoir as dealing with "controversies that the Society could not feel called to enter." Octavo. Green cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine.
