South Bend: Regnery/Gateway, 1979. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket. Hardcover. Written in the late 1970s by a Frenchman for a French audience, this book was quickly translated into multiple languages and distributed internationally as much of its political theories felt timely and relevant for other audiences. Aron focuses on defending "liberal" rather than "decadent" Europe as the title suggests. He criticizes the economic and ideological faults of socialism, discusses the moral guilt instilled by Marxist-Leninists, and explains why the communist / socialist ideals may sound appealing but would not be advantageous to the people of France or Europe. He also explores critical late-1970s issues which persist today such as energy problems, inflation, and needs for social reform. Includes tables comparing wages, growth rate, living standards, shares of world trade, etc. for various European countries, the USA, and Soviet Union.
